    Dear Coach,

I wish you the happiest of birthdays. Thank you so much for all you have done for the people around the world.

As a psychologist who works with children with developmental disabilities I have tried to use your sage principles to help children, parents and their teachers. In lectures I share that your principles of outstanding teaching apply to everyone including baseketball players and children with special needs.

When I was 11 years old you wrote me a letter that was incredibly important in my life. You included the poem:

    “Remember this your lifetime through,
Tomorrow there will be more to do,
And failure waits for all who stay,
    With some success made yesterday,
Tomorrow you must try once more,
    And even harder than before.”

Your letter, the poem and your life has been truly inspirational.

    Thank you and Happy Birthday!

    Happy Birthday Coach Wooden.
You have been an inspiration to me for many, many years. As a freshman at UCLA in 1972, you sat across from me during breakfast my first day at school. Here I was my first day at UCLA, and there was my idol sitting across from me. You were so kind to me as I nervously asked you some basketball questions. I never forgot that moment.

    Go Bruins!

  14. Bob Charnaw says:

    Dear Coach,
I want to take a few minutes to wish you all the best on this your 99th b-day. You have brought much happiness into my life, my wifes life and my sons life, all of us Bruins. I was on campus 65 to 71 and saw the best. Even #10, my little boy at the time watched every minute. That was all he needed, a Bruin for life. I was there at the first Kareem game against SC when he blew them out. One more moment, we were in the Coop and saw you chew out Sidney and Curtis. I can go on and on. But what I remember the most was when you spoke at my letterman’s dinner in Palm Springs in the early 60s. So here’s to you Coach, see you at the games.

    With Love and Blessings,

    Bob Charnaw, UCLA Engineering,69, 71 & 81

As a Bruin in the ’70’s, it was a thrill to see you on campus. I avidly watched your games and the magic you inspired in your teams. You and your book has served to be such a great role model for me and my family. My family had an opportunity to meet you personally in the 90’s. My son participated in Craig Impelman’s Basketball Camp and the highlight in all our lives was meeting you on the last day of the camp. You were gracious and welcoming to my children who were your biggest fans. Thank you for instilling great values in our lives. I wish you continued blessings. See you at Pauley! Until then enjoy a blessed 99th!!

  41. Ian says:

I am 12 yrs old playing basketball for my team the Mahalo Tigers, and in the 7th grade. I live near UCLA and enjoy watching the basketball games; with some of my favorite players Collison, Westbrook, and Shipp. But my favorite player/coach ,and who has made the biggest difference in my life was you, John Wooden, your many life lessons taught to you by your peers, Glenn Curtis, Piggy Lambert ,or Joshua Hugh Wooden. When Im in the middle of a basketball game or in the middle of my math class I recite to myself, “Success is having the knowledge that you tried your personal best to achieve success.”(not your exact words). Was one of my favorite life lessons that you had taught. If I were to ever meet you, i’m sure we would be great friends. But right know you have been a great teacher, through your book My Personal Best which was a birthday present when I was turning 6 or 7, and it has been the best and most useful present I have ever gotten by my best friend Russell W (not Westbrook). But on that note I would like to say Thank-you for guiding me on the right path, and finally; have a happy birthday! Happy Birthday Mr.Wooden.
