Hello Coach Wooden:
I remember when I was a kid in Maryland that I cheered against UCLA. I guess I wanted to see a David slay a Goliath per se.
In my later years, and in my reading of your books on coaching and leadership, I realized your faith in God, your values, and your loyalty to your players all played a role in those many championships I saw you win when I was growing up. I also came to admire you because you championed diversity with your team before it became commonplace to do so.
As a father and a husband, I now try to be that man of God, a man of integrity, and a man of principle, that you aspired or at least I believe you to be. Happy 99th birthday from a now fan and admirer. God bless you.

The high point of the 1960’s was watching a “taped delayed” UCLA basketball. I would set the alarm for after midnight, watch the game and then try to sleep before going to work the next morning. Coach Wooden’s teams were that good and that exciting.

I am 71 and attended the final 4 tournament in Houston when UCLA beat Villanova for the NCAA championship in the Astrodome in 1971.

My son’s team won the OKLA State Championship via that philosophy. It is personal to me since my confirmation saint, St Theresa, lived by that motto.
